Lead Types Explained: Which One Fits How You Sell
Data lead, pay-per-call, live transfer, booked appointment, aged lead — each demands a different sales setup. Buy the type that matches your team, not the one that sounds best.

Why the type matters as much as the sector
Two suppliers can both sell you “leads” and mean completely different things. The type decides how much work your team does after the handover and what kind of sales setup you need. Buy a type your process can’t service and you’ll waste good leads — so match it to how you sell, not to what sounds most premium.
The types, and who each suits
Data / form lead — fresh contact details from someone who’s just enquired. Good volume, but your team does all the chasing and qualifying. Suits you if you can follow up in minutes and work through volume. Speed-to-lead is everything here.
Aged lead — an older data lead, resold. Lower intent (the person enquired a while ago). Suits you if you run high-volume outreach and expect a low hit rate — useful as a top-up, not a core channel.
Pay-per-call — a live inbound call from an interested prospect, generated by the supplier’s advertising. Higher intent than a form. Suits you if you convert well on the phone and can answer calls as they come.
Live transfer — the supplier qualifies the prospect, then transfers them to your line while they’re still on the phone. You skip the chase entirely. Suits you if you can staff live calls and close in real time. High conversion when you’re set up for it.
Booked appointment — a confirmed diary slot with a prospect who’s agreed to speak. The most hands-off type. Suits you if your sale needs a proper scheduled conversation to close.
Match it to your team
| Lead type | Your team’s job | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Data / form | Chase fast, qualify | You can follow up in minutes |
| Aged | High-volume outreach | You want a low-cost top-up |
| Pay-per-call | Answer and convert live | You’re strong on the phone |
| Live transfer | Take the call, close | You can staff live calls |
| Booked appointment | Turn up and sell | Your sale needs a real conversation |
The rule of thumb
The further the supplier takes the prospect, the less your team does — but the more your process has to be built around it. There’s no point buying data leads if nobody can call them within the hour, and no point paying for booked appointments if a quick call would have closed the same person. Pick the type your sales setup can genuinely service, then get good at it. On top of any type, decide exclusive vs shared →.
Frequently asked questions
What is a live transfer lead?
A live transfer is a prospect the supplier has pre-qualified and then connected straight to your phone line while they're still on the call. You speak to an interested, screened person in real time — so it converts well, but you need someone ready to take the call the moment it comes in.
What's the difference between a data lead and a booked appointment?
A data lead is raw contact details your team has to chase. A booked appointment is a confirmed slot in your diary with a prospect who's agreed to speak at a set time. The appointment does far more of the work for you, but your sales process has to be built to run scheduled conversations.
Which lead type should my business buy?
Match the type to your sales capacity. If you can follow up in minutes and work volume, data leads suit you. If you convert best in live conversation and can staff it, go for calls or live transfers. If your sale needs a proper booked conversation, buy appointments. Buying a type your process can't service is wasted money.
